What is Tokyo Rabbit Paradise?(TRaP)
Tokyo Rabbit Paradise is an exhibition of video works by 46 Tokyo-based artists devised to give the viewers a new, varied and different angle on Tokyo. For the whole month, visitors to Museum of Contemporary Art will be able to access the individual video works of their choice on the screens in the "Tokyo Rabbit Paradise" houses installed in the exhibition area. We hope to show you that Tokyo offers far more than the miserable rabbit-hutch existence that is often portrayed; indeed we hope you will be able to share our view that, despite the lack of space, Tokyo is nothing less than a "Rabbit Paradise" - a wonderful, exciting place to be. Tokyo, one of the most expensive cities in the world, is also, to the artists participating here, one of the most interesting.

What is in the show?
The show comprises of video works by 46 artists, works depicting both aspects of life in Tokyo and the personal interests of the creators. The entire collection of video works made for this show can be seen across the globe, in real-time, on the TRaP homepage uploaded onto the internet. In addition to streamed video, viewers will be able to access four webcams set up in Tokyo, feeding live images of the city across the world.

"akihabara TV" is an international video art festival staged in Tokyo's Akihabara Electric Town. In 2002, for Akihabara TV_03, new works by 26 artists from 10 countries are released onto TVs and computer screens all across the town, and, in this age of broad band internet access, Akihabara TV_03 streams it's way into homes across the globe.

◆What is akihabara TV?

'akihabara TV', initiated by command N in 1999, has been held twice in Akihabara, Tokyo's large "electric town". Akihabara is home to hundreds of shops and buildings selling the latest electrical equipment and parts for hi-tech products. Banks of TVs, computers, video cameras and DVDs constantly stream imagery at the visiting customers. This equipment will be "taken over" and used to host "Akihabara TV" It is as if the Akihabara area provides the hardware for the show while command N provides the software or programming. By showing artists' works on the monitors in the shops, the everyday scenery of Akihabara starts to transform into a site-specific work of art. Our aim with the project is to utilize as many as possible of the monitors already set up in the shops and to reach the largest number of people we can amongst the shoppers visiting Akihabara. Consciously or unconsciously, they will come to be the audience of "Akihabara TV_03". The project is able to offer people the experience of seeing video art in a way which is different from that offered them in museums or gallery spaces. Akihabara TV has developed a collaborative relationship with many of the local electric shops and with local government, as well as with curators and organizations who have supported the project with curatorial advice.
In aTV_03, a variety of works by 26 artists from 10 countries will be shown - there are documentaries, animation and computer graphic works. Some works are screensavers for display computers in the hands-on section of shops, and long versions of works (up to 10 mins) will also be shown in the home theatre display areas of participating shops. Up to now, 62 shops have agreed to cooperate in showing this programme. This is double the number of shops which participated last time, in 2000.

exonemo is an unit by Kensuke Sembo (1972) and Yae Akaiwa (1973).
Started in 1996 as an experimental website, it has been awarded in several
media arts festivals in and out of Japan, and now is regarded as one of the
emerging young web artist in the realm of art+web+technology.

'DISCODER' is a device to write inconsistency into HTML code originally
made for the net gallery 'CyGnet'(http://www.shiseido.co.jp/cygnet/)run
by Shiseido Co., Ltd.

In this installation version, 'DISCODER' will allow the audience to interact
more physically in the space. The interface is the numerous cables extended
from the keyboard and mice scattered on the floor. You can reach them to
invade or remove the bugs to HTML, then the image is desplayed on the wall
simultaneously so that everyone in the space can share the same experience
of what is going on.

'DISCODER (Installation version)' was shown in two places this september;
Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria) and Media Select 2000 (Nagoya) and widely
noticed by both audiences. It is the first chance to see it in Tokyo Akihaba
ra,
where densely packed high-tech & techno gadjetry and Game Otaku/nerds
are in common everyday.

Ken Lum is a Chinese-Canadian artist lives in the multi-racial city Vancouver, Canada where he was born in 1956. Started activity in the 70's, his works often focused on the interplay of words and visual languages with simple texts and photograghs of people. His latest work consists of a series of framed mirrors with snapshots of the daily lives of people placed into the edges of mirrors. As looking at the works with looking at their own reflected image, the work cast a question about 'personal' directly onto the spectator's eye.

He started practicing journalism in the student magazine for contemporary art "3 + 4" as a writer, during the first student year. Since 1996. has been working for Belgrade TVand radio station "Studio B" as a professional journalist. During this period became very well familiar with contemporary art scene in Belgrade and Yugoslavia, whose vital part was and still is (though in different circumstances due to political situation) "Rex, an art center "part of B92. With using a lot of examples of video arts for these 10 years, Viot's powwow will examine how the artists use daily life as a topic of their own language, and how this situation in the art world point the rupture between reality and fiction creates a schizophrenic relation between the audience and the images.
