Biography
Hjorth was born in London and grew up in Australia.
She studied visual art, philosophy and anthropology and has been keen
to apply interdisciplinary frameworks in order to critique, question
and displace the conventional model of hypodermic and couch-potato sensibilities
often attached to consumerism. Last year she was in Tokyo on an Australia
council residency exploring the ambiguous, ubiquitous and yet site -specificality
of popular culture and consumerism. Next year she will be the first
Australia visual artist at the Japanese International residency Akiysohidai
International Art Village. She is an artist, writer and lecturer. She
has published in Art Asia Pacific,
Art and Australia,
Broadsheet, Paletten,
Artlink, and has a
chapter on the politics of cute character culture in Tokyo in Mobile
Cultures, (Eds) F.
Martin, A.Yue, C.Berry, USA: Duke University Press, 2001.
